The Tradition of Venerating Saints in the Catholic Church
The Ancient Catholic Church, with its deep and rich history, is characterised by numerous beautiful traditions and practices. Among these is the veneration of saints—a tradition that stands as a cornerstone of Catholic spirituality and identity. This practice not only affirms the community of believers but also serves as a profound reminder of the eternal connection between heaven and earth.
Saints are seen as exemplars of virtue, enduring faith, and a lived relationship with God. As candidates prepare for confirmation, they are invited to choose a saint’s name, symbolising their commitment to emulate the virtues of that saint and to seek their intercession throughout their lives.

The Veneration of Saints: A Historical Perspective
The practice of venerating saints can be traced back to the early days of Christianity. The first Christians honoured martyrs—those who died for their faith—by gathering near their graves and celebrating their lives and sacrifices. This practice gradually evolved into a more organized veneration of not only martyrs but also other holy figures who lived exemplary lives of faith.
By the fourth century, the Church recognized the importance of saints as intercessors—individuals who, by their lives of holiness and virtue, are deemed capable of interceding with God on behalf of the faithful. The canonization process was formalized over the centuries, ensuring that those recognized as saints had demonstrated lives of extraordinary virtue and devotion.
Today, the Church recognizes thousands of saints, each representing a unique aspect of Christian life and spirituality, providing a diverse tapestry of role models for the faithful.
